The project
The Pavillon is the new reference point for digital culture in Wallonia. Located on the Esplanade de la Citadelle in Namur, this new centre for exhibitions, experiments and innovations breaks down the barriers between disciplines, and simultaneously embraces art, science and technology to better question our present times.
With a programme that is both demanding and accessible to all, the Pavillon offers visitors the chance to explore the impact of technological innovations, but also to open up new perspectives, challenge certainties, arouse emotions, encourage reflection and delight the eye and the senses. All in a fun, relaxed atmosphere.
The Pavillon hosts temporary exhibitions, conferences, workshops, courses and performances throughout the year.
The location
Despite its astronomical station look, the Pavilion is not from Mars but from Milan. It was the Belgian pavilion at the 2015 Universal Exhibition in Milan. Designed by Namur architect Patrick Génard, the Pavilion’s structure echoes the theme chosen for this 2015 edition: “Feeding the planet, energy for life”.
“We designed the Belgian pavilion in the shape of a lobe city. In reaction to the concentric growth of cities, which is felt to be suffocating, the lobe-shaped structure advocates the construction, around the heart of the city, of a series of neighbourhoods separated by green spaces. These neighbourhoods are independent but interconnected. This circular structure, which has been adopted by the cities of Berlin, Copenhagen and Aalst, is the most eco-sustainable because it limits travel, allows better circulation of energy flows and reduces costs,” explains Patrick Génard.
