On 29 June 1980, the famous rock band AC/DC played at the Palais des Expositions in Namur. It was the band’s first concert with new lead singer Brian Johnson, following the tragic death of Bon Scott on 19 February 1980.
It was also the first show of the ‘Back in Black’ world tour, named after the world’s best-selling rock album to date.
In 2021, 41 years after this legendary concert, the hemicycle-shaped square in front of the Palais des Expositions was named “Esplanade AC/DC” by the City of Namur, at the request of a group of fans.
A statue of Brian Johnson created by artist Anthony Cognaux was installed on the Esplanade. The statue is surrounded by 16 chairs symbolising the current and former members of AC/DC.
On 16 April 2023, Brian Johnson returned to Namur to inaugurate this space dedicated to this legendary band.
This square symbolises the memory of a concert engraved in the minds of many Namurians.
